Meaning and background

The story behind Alto

Alto is a musical term borrowed from Italian alto, meaning high, with Latin altus behind it. In choral writing it now refers to a voice range commonly below soprano, a fact that can seem odd until the history of male higher parts is considered. It is a neat two-syllable sound for a dog, but a musical word rather than a personal name originally meaning “powerful voice”.

Origin
English musical term from Italian alto, “high”, from Latin altus. Source
Meaning
In music, a voice part or range; the term originally described a high male vocal register. Source
