Meaning and background

The story behind Amanda

Amanda is based on the Latin adjective amanda, meaning “lovable” or “worthy of love”. Although related in form to the Latin name Amandus, Amanda was re-created by English writers in the seventeenth century rather than passed down continuously as a medieval women’s name. A character in Colley Cibber’s 1696 play Love’s Last Shift provides a documented literary example. The name is familiar in British English, with the stress on MAN.
