Meaning and background
The story behind Anaheim
Anaheim is a California city whose name combines Ana, referring to the Santa Ana River, with German heim, “home”. The city’s own history says German settlers founded the original community in 1857 and described the location as a home beside the river. That is a documented place-name construction, not an ordinary modern English word. For a dog it is a distinctive American location reference, usually shortened only by personal preference.
