Meaning and background
The story behind Appu
Appu was the young-elephant mascot of the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi. The Olympic Council of Asia’s history identifies the mascot and explains that this was the first Asian Games held under the council. For a household with memories of the event, the name has a particular sporting and animal connection. Appu’s mascot role supplies that story without establishing elephant as a literal translation of every personal name written with these letters.
