Meaning and background
The story behind Audi
Audi is the car manufacturer’s name, chosen when founder August Horch could no longer use his surname as a brand. Horch is a German instruction to listen, and the company chose its Latin counterpart audi. The distinctive four rings came later and are not part of the word’s literal meaning. Used for a dog, Audi gives two quick syllables with an unmistakable motoring association.
