Meaning and background
The story behind Augustus
Augustus was an ancient Roman name and title meaning “exalted” or “venerable”. It became famous through Octavian, the first Roman emperor, and was later used as an imperial title. The month August was named after him, not the other way round. Augustus has three syllables in ordinary English and is the fuller, formal form from which several shorter names developed.
