Meaning and background

The story behind Avis

Avis was borne as a female personal name in medieval England after Norman usage. Its origin is probably a Latinised version of the Germanic Aveza, whose older root has an unknown meaning. Medieval speakers associated its spelling with Latin avis, “bird”, but that is not the same as proving it started as a bird name. In English Avis is normally two syllables, AY-viss.
