Meaning and background
The story behind Baiji
Baiji is the common name of the Yangtze river dolphin, an extraordinary freshwater cetacean native to China. The last verified sightings were in 2001 and 2002; an extensive search in 2006 found no survivors. It is a distinctive nature-derived dog name, but it carries the story of a species in grave decline, not a fanciful translation such as “white river spirit”.
