Meaning and background
The story behind Bally
Bally appears at the beginning of many Irish place-names, where it commonly represents the Irish element baile, meaning a settlement or townland. Ballymena and Ballymahon are examples of that naming pattern, but a dog called simply Bally has no demonstrable single etymology. The cheerful two-syllable sound is a reason someone might choose it, quite apart from any connection with Ireland.
- Origin
- In Irish place-names, Bally- commonly represents Irish baile, “settlement” or “townland”; this does not prove Bally as a stand-alone pet name has that origin. Source
