The story behind Barbie
Barbie began as a diminutive of Barbara, long before the doll arrived in 1959. Inventor Ruth Handler named the toy after her daughter Barbara, and that later association has become hard to separate from the word. As a dog name it therefore carries a straightforward personal-name history alongside a particularly famous cultural reference. Neither suggests that the name literally translates as “fashion” or “beauty”.
