Meaning and background
The story behind Bark
Bark makes a particularly direct joke as a dog name: its English sound sense goes back to Old English beorcan. The same spelling also names the outer covering of a tree, but that word has a different Scandinavian history. An owner could enjoy either the canine pun or a woodland reference. Because bark is already something people may say around dogs, try it in ordinary conversation as well as as a call. Its shortness does not make the two meanings interchangeable.

- English word for a dog’s abrupt cry, with a separate tree-covering sense. The sound word continues Old English beorcan. Source
