Meaning and background
The story behind Beatrice
Beatrice is the Italian form of Beatrix and has two notable literary associations in the reference. Dante’s Beatrice guides him through paradise, while Shakespeare’s Beatrice appears in Much Ado About Nothing. Those associations give an owner more than a vague claim that the name sounds literary. Pronunciation also deserves a decision: the Italian ending differs from English readings, and the English name can be compressed or pronounced with an additional middle vowel. A dog called Beatrice can keep the full formal name even if a household later chooses a shorter call name.
