Meaning and background
The story behind Beibei
Beibei has a documented panda association with the National Zoo cub whose name was announced in 2015 and commonly styled Bei Bei. Linguist Victor Mair writes the name as Bèibèi 贝贝, explaining the character’s connections with cowries, money and valuables. His analysis makes the written Chinese form central to that explanation. For a dog owner inspired by this panda, that is a more precise account than assigning a treasure translation to every name written Beibei without knowing its characters.
