Meaning and background
The story behind Bern
Bern is Switzerland’s federal city, founded in medieval records under the Zähringen dynasty. Bears feature prominently in its civic tradition, but Bern’s own municipal history cautions that the city name has no securely established derivation; Celtic or Verona connections have been proposed. It is compact and easy to call, yet “bear” should not be stated as its proven translation.
