Meaning and background
The story behind Betelgeuse
Betelgeuse is the traditional name of the conspicuous red supergiant in Orion, long derived from an Arabic phrase meaning the hand of al-Jawzā. Its spelling has a history of scribal misreadings, and a once-circulated “armpit” explanation does not match the earliest phrase. The unusual length creates a rather theatrical dog name; the real astronomy and linguistic history are interesting enough without a fabricated translation.
