Meaning and background
The story behind Blackberry
Blackberry refers to the dark fruit of a bramble, rather than necessarily to an animal’s coat. The English compound was already used in Old English, and its first element refers to the ripe fruit’s colour. It also became the name of a once-familiar electronic device, but the plant sense is considerably older. The four-syllable word can readily shorten to Berry in everyday use.
