Meaning and background
The story behind Boki
Boki is recorded in Hawaiian history as the name of a governor of Oʻahu. The Honolulu Museum of Art describes John Hayter’s 1824 portrait of Boki and his wife, Liliha, painted in London during King Kamehameha II’s delegation. After the king and queen died there, Boki led the party home. The portrait gives this spelling a particular historical and artistic association, without establishing a dictionary meaning for a dog’s name.
