Meaning and background
The story behind Brisbane
Brisbane chiefly evokes the Queensland capital, but the city's name came from the Brisbane River, named in honour of colonial governor Sir Thomas Brisbane. The Scottish surname has its own history, described differently by surname references and the Queensland place-name register. It is therefore more accurate to explain the city's commemorative naming than to translate Brisbane as a single English phrase.
