Meaning and background
The story behind Brookins
Brookins has a less obvious history than the visible word brook might suggest. The Dictionary of American Family Names treats it as a variant of Brooking, a Devon surname for someone living by a stream; the final -s is a later spelling addition. It is therefore misleading to translate Brookins as ‘many brooks’ or to assume a unique family origin from the spelling alone.
- Origin
- English surname variant of Devon Brooking, from a stream-related topographic formation, with a later non-grammatical -s. Source
