Meaning and background
The story behind Caio
Caio is a Portuguese and Italian form of the Roman name Gaius. The older name’s meaning is uncertain: a connection with Latin rejoicing is proposed, but an Etruscan route is also discussed. Caio therefore should not be presented as an unqualified translation of joy. Its pronunciation also depends on language, with the reference distinguishing Portuguese and Italian endings. For a dog, the short written form may be attractive, especially if you want a connection to one of those language traditions rather than a guessed literal meaning.
