Meaning and background
The story behind Cecil
Cecil has a more complicated history than its neat two-syllable form suggests. As a given name it can be traced to Roman Caecilius, but the prominent English Cecil family bore a surname descending through Welsh Seisyll from a different Roman name, Sextilius. Both strands helped shape later English use. Reducing all of them to one supposed definition would lose an important distinction.
