Meaning and background
The story behind Chadwick
Chadwick began as an English place-based surname and only later became a given name. Several English settlements supplied it: some place names include Ceadel, others Ceadda, with an Old English element wīc for a farm or settlement. That means the often repeated translation ‘Chad's village’ is too narrow for every bearer. A genuine historical surname is more useful than a one-size-fits-all invented definition.
