Meaning and background

The story behind Chaise

Chaise is a French word for a chair, but English acquired it originally for a kind of light passenger carriage. The French form developed from an older word related to Latin cathedra, a seat. It later appeared in the furniture expression chaise longue, literally long chair. Those layers give the word more history than simply calling it a sofa. The dog's spelling is a genuine borrowing, although intended pronunciation may vary.
