Meaning and background
The story behind Chapel
Chapel is an English word for a small or subsidiary place of Christian worship. The name travelled through Old French from medieval Latin capella, a word linked to a small cape or cloak. One traditional explanation concerns a relic of Saint Martin's cloak, although an altar-covering explanation has also been offered. That makes the building word's history richer than the simple phrase small church, without establishing Chapel as an ancient personal name.
