Meaning and background
The story behind Cheerio
Cheerio is a cheerful-sounding British informal farewell. It developed in the early twentieth century from earlier forms associated with cheer, and is still recognisable as a casual goodbye. The word's social history is more precise than claiming an old personal name meaning happiness. Some people may also think of the breakfast cereal Cheerios, but that is a later separate brand association, not the origin of the greeting.
