Meaning and background
The story behind Chef
Chef arrived in English from French chef de cuisine, literally the head of a kitchen. The French word chef originally meant a chief or leader, so the modern culinary sense developed out of an ordinary title. Used for a dog, Chef is a neat one-syllable joke, perhaps especially for an animal interested in food. Its meaning is an occupation, however, and does not imply the pet actually has any cooking skill.
