The University of Alaska's Native Language Center traces it to Lower Tanana Athabascan Ch'eno', a place-name indirectly referring to game animals such as caribou in the valley. That is a substantive local-language history rather than a guessed translation. It cannot establish whether a dog called Chena was named for the river, for Alaska or for an unrelated personal reason.
