Meaning and background
The story behind Cherry
Cherry is the ordinary English name for the small stone fruit and its tree. The word passed through medieval French from Latin and Greek forms, with the ancient underlying root still uncertain. That fruit history is different from Cherie, the French-derived term of affection. As a dog's name Cherry has a light, two-syllable sound and can evoke a bright fruit or colour, but it does not literally mean sweetheart by derivation.
