Meaning and background
The story behind Chessie
Chessie has a traceable place in American railway history. The Chesapeake & Ohio Railway used a sleeping kitten called Chessie in advertising, and the name later became part of the Chessie System identity. Railway historians link the informal name with Chesapeake. It is an appealing animal-associated reference, although the records cannot tell whether a dog owner had the railway, the cat or simply the sound in mind.
