Meaning and background
The story behind Chianti
Chianti is the name of a region of Tuscany and the wine produced under that geographical designation. Its immediate Italian association is well documented by the regional wine consortium and European protected-designation records. The more remote history of the place name is less certain, and wine is not a literal translation of Chianti. As a dog's name, its distinctive three-syllable sound carries a clear place association.
