Meaning and background
The story behind Chihiro
Chihiro is an established Japanese given name with several possible ways to write it. The kanji 千尋 can be analysed as thousand and fathom or armspan, but other character combinations are used and need not share that sense. Many readers will also recognise Chihiro as the protagonist of the animated film Spirited Away. The cultural association is secure; a single English translation for an unaccompanied romanised spelling is not.
