Meaning and background
The story behind Chooch
Chooch is the younger brother in Chooch Helped, Andrea L. Rogers’s picture book illustrated by Rebecca Lee Kunz. Its Cherokee family story follows a toddler whose attempts to join in with painting, cooking and pottery frustrate his sister Sissy. Readers may recognise the affectionate chaos of a small helper. A dog named after Chooch can recall that particular book, although the character’s cultural setting does not establish a Cherokee dictionary meaning for the name.
