Meaning and background
The story behind Cyrano
Cyrano has both a literary association and an uncertain older derivation. Behind the Name suggests a possible connection with the ancient city Cyrene and records Edmond Rostand's 1897 play, based on the real French satirist Savinien Cyrano de Bergerac. A dog can be named for the play without the geographic proposal being settled. Keeping that uncertainty visible gives a better account than presenting Cyrene as a proven origin.
