Meaning and background
The story behind Dima
Dima represents two different name traditions, not a single translation. Arabic Dima, written ديمة, refers to a downpour; Russian and Georgian Dima is an affectionate short form of Dmitriy. Those are independently recorded forms that happen to share a Latin spelling. Without the name-giver's language context it would be misleading to claim that every Dima means 'rain' or is automatically a form of Dimitri.
