Meaning and background
The story behind Dinky
Dinky comes from Scots and northern English dink, once used for something neat, trim or smartly dressed. It developed the familiar British sense of something small and attractively formed; the deeper origin of dink remains uncertain. The word makes a transparent, affectionate dog name without claiming that the animal is necessarily tiny. British usage is also noticeably warmer than some North American senses of the adjective.
