Meaning and background
The story behind Dippy
Dippy is an informal English adjective historically used for someone behaving foolishly or as though infatuated. Its own word history is not wholly clear, with more than one proposed explanation. In Britain it also has a separate, much friendlier cultural identity: Dippy is the affectionate name of the Natural History Museum's Diplodocus cast. That makes the dinosaur reference credible, though it does not show how any particular dog was named.
