Meaning and background
The story behind Disney
Disney started as a family name, not a word meaning magic or happiness. The surname has Norman roots and identifies an ancestor from Isigny in Normandy; its French preposition became fused into the spelling over time. Walt Disney and the entertainment company later made it internationally recognisable, but those associations are separate from its medieval geographical history. The historical surname provides a much more exact explanation of the name.
