Meaning and background
The story behind Dobbin
Dobbin is an old English familiar name for a working or farm horse. Its history is unusually well documented: it probably developed from the medieval personal nickname Dob, itself used for Robert or Robin, and was transferred to horses by the sixteenth century. As a dog name, Dobbin therefore carries an animal-naming precedent, although the earlier species was equine rather than canine. It need not describe a dog's size or strength.
