Meaning and background
The story behind Doby
Doby is a northern English variant of the surname Dobbie, with an inherited link to the familiar name Dob and ultimately Robert. The same letters can represent a Hungarian family name identifying a person from a place called Dob or Doba. These are genuinely different historical histories; it would be misleading to combine them into a fanciful meaning. In ordinary English speech Doby reads readily as two syllables.
- Origin
- Northern English variant of Dobbie; alternatively Hungarian habitational surname from Dob or Doba Source
