Meaning and background
The story behind Dodger
Dodger is an English agent noun for someone who dodges or evades. It also gained a memorable literary identity through the Artful Dodger, the young pickpocket in Charles Dickens's Oliver Twist. Later, the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers made it a sporting name. These are separate historical associations, not evidence that a dog named Dodger is necessarily evasive or mischievous. Its two syllables are easy to call in British English.
