Meaning and background
The story behind Dolly
Dolly began as an English pet form of Dorothy, in use long before doll was an ordinary word for a child's toy. Modern sources also record Dolly as a possible affectionate form of Dolores. Those histories should not be collapsed into a supposed literal meaning of 'little doll'. Its association with the singer Dolly Parton is a separate, recognisable cultural reference. In daily use the name is uncomplicated and clearly two syllables.
