Meaning and background
The story behind Domino
Domino is the name for a marked tile used in the game of dominoes, and can also refer to the game itself. An older French word for a kind of clerical hood is one proposed source of the game-piece word, but the historical link is explicitly uncertain. A supposed direct meaning of 'master' would therefore be misleading. The three-syllable English sound makes Domino distinctive without requiring a fabricated ancient personal-name translation.
