Meaning and background
The story behind Donatello
Donatello is an Italian diminutive of Donato, a name that comes from Latin Donatus, 'given'. Its best-known historical bearer is the fifteenth-century Florentine sculptor Donatello, born Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi. Children may also recognise Donatello as a character in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but that does not change its Renaissance and earlier name history. Spoken with Italian stress, it has four syllables.
