Meaning and background
The story behind Doodlebug
Doodlebug has two especially distinct dictionary senses. In American English it can mean an antlion larva; in Britain it became a nickname for the German V-1 flying bomb during the Second World War. The same unusual compound also appears in other folk uses. A dog named Doodlebug may be called affectionately, but neither an insect nor a wartime reference should be asserted as its owner's chosen meaning without evidence.
