Meaning and background
The story behind Douglas
Douglas came into given-name use from a Scottish surname linked to Douglas Water and the neighbouring town in Lanarkshire. Gaelic dubh, 'dark', and glais, 'water' or 'river', explain the traditional geographic reading 'dark river'. The powerful medieval Douglas family forms part of its later history, but the original naming was topographic rather than a prediction about someone's nature. Dogs may be called Doug or Dougie for short.
