Meaning and background
The story behind Dre
Dre is an established English short form of Andre, itself part of the Andrew name family. One notable modern bearer of the nickname is the American musician Dr. Dre, born Andre Young, so it also has a clear popular-music association. The name is not independently derived from a new word meaning 'strong': that reading belongs further back in the Greek Andrew family. As a dog call it is short and direct, with a single stressed syllable.
