Meaning and background

The story behind Duce

Duce is an Italian word for a leader, inherited from Latin dux. It became historically notorious as the title Il Duce used by Benito Mussolini as the dictator of Fascist Italy; that political usage should be acknowledged rather than concealed or romanticised. The Italian word is not simply a different spelling of the English surname Duke, even though both trace back to Latin vocabulary for leadership. Its pronunciation differs from the English word 'deuce'.
