Meaning and background
The story behind Dutchess
Dutchess has an exact geographical reference in Dutchess County, New York. The county historian explains that it was established in 1683 and named for Mary of Modena, then Duchess of York. Its extra t preserves the seventeenth-century spelling found in the founding law. This makes Dutchess more than an unexplained alteration of Duchess: the historical place spelling is real, although that county association need not be the reason every owner chooses it.
