Meaning and background
The story behind Ebisu
Ebisu is one of Japan’s Seven Lucky Gods, associated with fishing and business prosperity. Japan’s national tourism organisation describes his connection with Miho-jinja Shrine and the musical-instrument offerings preserved there. Its account of Osaka’s Toka Ebisu festival also records prayers directed to him by people in commerce. As a dog name, Ebisu can carry a specific religious or travel reference. That cultural context is more accurate than presenting the name as a generic Japanese translation of luck or a promise of good fortune.
