Meaning and background
The story behind Edda
Edda has distinct documented histories. In Italian it is a form of Hedda; the Icelandic and Old Norse entry instead gives a possible great-grandmother meaning and connections with the medieval Eddas. The literary title and the character called Edda are not securely shown to have the same explanation. For a dog, an owner may intend either the Italian name or the Norse literary association. State that choice rather than giving every Edda one translation, and keep the uncertainty around the older literary connection visible.
